SEX

So I was actually home ridiculously early today and was able to catch my first Oprah episode in a very long time. Today was another sex talk episode with Dr. Laura Berman. It focused on having the sex talk with your children. Interviewed was a 14 year old couple wanting to take the next step, aka SEX, in their relationship. They have been dating 3 MONTHS. Did I mention they're 14? I am no prude, believe in TRUE sex education, and feel people are free to do as they please as long as they are safe. But these KIDS were so unsure about everything and you could hear in their voices and see in their body language they weren't completely sure, completely comfortable, or completely educated about sex and its consequences. I do however applaud the boy's mother for her openness with her son and her ability to be realistic about teenagers today and their hormones and curiosity. But what I found most interesting, and frankly frightening, is that, according to Dr. Berman, 1/3 of girls in the US are pregnant before the age of 20. TWENTY?!! 20?? 2-0?!!! How scary is that? Thank you former President Bush for your incredibly intelligent decision to fund abstinence-only education in public schools. Giving teenagers all the information and education on safe sex is not going to make them want to do it more. They most likely already want to do it (apparently, they already ARE having it) so they may as well do it safely right?! UGH!!
